Part 2: Court Faces

Meet a few of the main or mean characters:
1. The arrow marked babbler is a greedy eater and is normally part of a noisy gang. Diet: prefers fruit but eats seeds too
2. The yellow-billed hornbill is the boss. He intimidates everyone else because he has a wingspan advantage. He quickly realises who feeds them and then relaxes about your presence. Diet: mainly seeds and suet
3. The sparrow is one of the smaller visitors and therefore has to fight for his bite. Diet: Seeds and suet
4. The crested barbet is a very cheeky, but nervous visitor. Diet: suet, seed cone, muesli
5. The red-billed hornbill dominates by sheer size. Second in ranking only to the yellow-billed hornbill Diet: mainly seeds, but eating suet is a tricky sticky issue
6. This is one of a pair of blue glossy starlings that frequent the food court. Diet: seeds, the seed cone and suet
7. Insects like bees, ants, flies and butterflies are of the smallest beings feasting on the spoils of the food court.
8. This magpie shrike wouldn’t find much to eat here; apart for maybe some insects hanging around. With its distinct clear call, it’s a very welcome visitor. Diet: bugs of all shapes and sizes
9. Squirrel is very jealous. He cannot stand it when the birds are descending on the feeders, but he is never the first in court. He gets cheeky as he tries to scare them away from a feeder. Diet: Mainly seeds, nuts and fruit
10. The village weavers are very active. They eat like they fear it’s going to go out of fashion. The fly away when other wings go a-flapping, but they return about 2 minutes later when it is business as usual. Diet: seeds, seeds and seeds, …
